Brave Hippos Font Review for Branding Projects

Opening a fresh brand board one afternoon, I was looking for something that would bring a bit of character to a new identity project—a boutique skincare line with a playful yet natural vibe. I stumbled across Brave Hippos, and after a quick test on a logo draft, it felt like the perfect match. It’s a display font with a quirky charm that immediately stood out from the usual suspects in my font library.

A Quirky Yet Natural Typeface

Brave Hippos isn’t your average typeface. It has a unique blend of whimsy and approachability, which makes it ideal for brands that want to stand out without being too over the top. The letterforms have a gentle, almost hand-drawn feel, but they maintain enough structure to feel professional. This balance is what makes it so versatile—whether you're designing a logo, a product label, or a social media graphic, it brings a sense of personality without sacrificing clarity.

The curves are soft and inviting, and the spacing feels just right. It doesn’t scream for attention but still manages to be memorable. I tested it on a packaging mockup for the skincare brand, and the result was charming—like a friendly neighbor who knows how to make a lasting impression.

Brave Hippos in Real Design Applications

I used Brave Hippos across several elements of the branding project. On the logo, it worked beautifully as a short phrase font. The name “LushRoots” looked lively and engaging when set in this font. For the brand board, I paired it with a clean sans-serif font to create contrast while keeping the overall look cohesive. The combination felt modern yet warm, which aligned perfectly with the brand's values.

On the website header, it performed well as a headline font. The readability was good even at smaller sizes, though I’d recommend avoiding long paragraphs in this font. It’s best suited for short bursts of text—like taglines, headlines, or call-to-action buttons. When applied to a business card, it added a touch of playfulness without making the design feel unprofessional.

In social media graphics, it brought a fun element to promotional posts. The font’s character helped the brand stand out in a crowded feed, especially when used in Instagram stories or carousel posts. However, I noticed that it wasn’t the best choice for body text on the website, where legibility becomes more critical.

Font Pairing and Styling Suggestions

When pairing Brave Hippos with other fonts, I found that combining it with a simple serif or sans-serif font created a balanced visual hierarchy. A classic example is using it with Helvetica Neue for body copy or Georgia for a more traditional feel. For a more artistic approach, a script font can complement its quirks, but I’d suggest limiting the use of decorative fonts to avoid overwhelming the viewer.

The font includes a few alternate characters and ligatures, which added subtle variety to the design without complicating the overall look. These features made it easy to customize the typography for different elements within the brand system.

Considerations and Best Practices

While Brave Hippos is a great display font, it may not be the best fit for projects requiring long-form text or formal corporate communication. Its playful nature works well for creative studios, handmade shops, and small businesses that want to express their personality through typography. Before using it in final client work, I always recommend testing it in different contexts—on screens, in print, and across various sizes—to ensure it meets the project’s needs.

It’s also essential to check the commercial font licensing before incorporating Brave Hippos into brand assets like templates, merchandise, or digital products. Ensuring proper usage rights will save time and prevent potential issues down the road.

Overall, Brave Hippos is a delightful addition to any designer’s toolkit. Its natural style and sweet character make it a go-to font for projects that need a touch of creativity and charm. Whether you’re working on a logo, packaging, or social media content, this font can elevate your designs and help your brand leave a lasting impression.
